What McLaren ownership actually demands from a workshop
A McLaren is not a fast Porsche or a fast Ferrari, and it does not behave like one in a workshop. The carbon MonoCell tub, the mid-mounted M838T or M840T twin-turbocharged V8, the V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Artura, the Proactive Chassis Control hydraulic suspension, and the seven-speed Seamless Shift Gearbox each demand specific knowledge that a generalist performance garage will not have built up.
That matters in practice. An independent McLaren specialist will recognise the symptoms of accumulator failure on the hydraulic suspension before it cascades into damper damage. They will know which 12C and 650S cars are due hydraulic pump replacement on the SSG before a fault code appears. They will understand the early-life recall history on the Artura and check campaign completion as part of a routine inspection. A general performance workshop, no matter how well equipped, simply has not seen enough of these cars to do that.
The other reason marque-specific experience matters is parts. McLaren parts pricing is closer to Formula 1 than to mainstream supercars, and lead times on certain items run to weeks. A specialist that has fitted the same accumulator, the same hydraulic pump, the same set of carbon ceramic rotors before knows which suppliers to call, which OEM-equivalent parts are acceptable, and where the dealer mark-up can be sidestepped without compromising the car. That experience translates directly into invoice totals.
